Great location, but not the most comfortable hotel

We stayed here the night of our arrival in Italy to kick off our honeymoon. Though Milan was not our ideal destination due to the litter, volume of cigarette smoke, and general hustling energy, our stay at Straf was okay! I doubt we would have slept very well if it weren’t for the intense jet lag - the mattresses in our room were extremely firm and we both struggled to find a comfortable position with the pillows. The room became very cold overnight; they shut off gas heating at the city/state level in April due to rationing. Though the aesthetic was beautiful with interesting artwork and a brass-covered bathroom, it wasn’t what we would consider to be comfortable. The staff was helpful, but you do have to request housekeeping - there was no turn-down service, for example. As a landing spot after a day of touring the historical highlights, it was just fine!

Quirky but Great

Ridiculously great location, we enjoyed our time at the STRAF hotel. We were welcomed to our room by a helpful staff member who showed us how everything works. I really enjoyed the minimalist aesthetic and our burnished brass bathroom. Housekeeping was excellent. Plug-ins for charging are a bit of a challenge to locate. We had a window that opened and I enjoyed looking out at the view of the street life, Galleria and the Duomo. We did not eat breakfast at the STRAF but instead went directly across the small street to the Rinascente. There is an elevator through the initial doors that will take you up to the 7th floor restaurants an hour before the rest of the department store opens. There are several eating options that are reasonably quiet at that time of day. We usually opted for something small at Illy but there are plenty of other options available. One caveat about transportation, Uber drivers cannot directly access the hotel but taxis are able to.

Stay in an art project, indeed

The motto of this hotel is “stay in an art project” and that is definitely true. Things are made to look nice but nothing is actually functional. I’ll start with what we liked: We stayed in one of the Junior Suites on the sixth floor, so we had a king bed and a little balcony. This was very nice, as we had a view of the Duomo. The location is great. You’re on one of the outside walls of the Galleria so you’re in the thick of everything. Rinascente is directly across the street, and there’s plenty to do in a very short walk. The staff was very pleasant, too, and helpful when it came to getting a cab or getting a coffee in the morning. What we didn’t like: the designers of the hotel went for form over function. The king bed looks sleek and sexy but is about as uncomfortable as a bed gets. The entire bathroom is done in brass and mirrors, so it smells like a penny and I hope you like looking at yourself naked because it’s literally all you see when taking a shower. The bathroom counter only comes up to your shins, which is just the oddest height for keeping your toiletries out. Then there’s the lighting. If this is an art project, it’s art with the worst lighting. Not a single switch makes sense. There is easily 12-15 light switches in the room and bathroom and they do not light up where and what you need when you need it. The bathroom shower is glass and so the one light you can find in the middle of the night lights up the whole room like a Christmas tree, disrupting your partner. There is another, less intense light, but it’s hidden beneath the hair dryer which is behind a little brass door so it’s not easy to find when it’s dark. There is a phone in the bathroom, which is an odd choice in this day and age (who is taking a landline call on the toilet?), but no trash can. My last complaint is in regards to the coffee in the room. For $600+ a night, you can put a Nespresso machine in the room. A kettle and one tiny packet of Nescafé is honestly just rude. I don’t want to talk to people first thing in the morning, I need some caffeine first. I feel like it’s a privilege I’m paying for when you say there is coffee in the room. It’s a fine hotel, just know that you’re getting a place to stay that is good for the ‘gram, but maybe lacking some creature comforts you’d expect from a hotel with these rates.

For the quintessential Milan experience look no further than the STRAF! A truly unique space in a picture perfect location invites to explore and enjoy in every aspect. We certainly did and had the pleasure to meet many lovely humans along the way catering to our every need and want always with a big smile. Galleria and Duomo around the corner, superb suggestion from the team and leading by example the "one and only" General Manager Alessandra Giovanniello. We could not be happier and she along with everyone else really made our time in this wonderful italian city unforgettable. Grazie Mille and ci vediamo in Italy!

Excellent location downtown Milano. Clean rooms, great hotel staff. Proximity to Duomo, Scala, Galeria VE. Definitely a repeat when passing through Milano. We were on a ski trip to the Dolomiti and used Milano as the transit hub. Impressed by hotel.
